The issue of Firefighter Safety and Survival has always been the reason we train. Leaders are the trainers, so to give you the very best tools to address the what we felt were the MOST important issues in this year's 2008 Safety, Health and Survival Week:
1. Fully implement NFPA 1500, compliant PPE.
2. Train and enforce use of PPE, including respiratory protection
.

We had some important questions. What do you know about your gear and its functionality? What would you do to avoid burn injuries if your gear became superheated? What is your departments SOP on Doffing gear? If you are like 99 percent of departments, you have never received any training on what to do in such an an emergency. Read and share Doffing Superheated Turnout Gear by Patrick Brown CFD for the answer.

What training have you had using the drag rescue device now mandatory on all new gear? Read and share Yocco Firefighter Drag Rescue Device by Frank Ricci and Anthony Avillo from the Fire Engineering 2008 personal protective equipment e-Newsletter, sponsored by Globe.

Finally, our gear and our work can be a deadly combination. Learn how to protect your firefighters. Read and share Physiological Status Monitoring for Firefighters: Watching Out for Stress and Overexertion Before It's Too Late by Mark Mordecai, also from the 2008 Fire Engineering personal protective equipment e-Newsletter, sponsored by Globe.

Make this week mean something. Read and share real training information that will make a difference today, from firefighters just like you who have been there and want to share. Hey, and remember--be careful out there.

FDIC, the largest and most attended firefighting educational conference in the world, is always interested in excellent classes and instructors. It is easy to apply and the rewards are incredible. Not only do you get to speak at the very best conference in the world, you get to travel to and attend the entire show for free. Fire Engineering will pay to fly you in or reimburse your mileage and pay your hotel for the entire show, even if your class is just one hour and forty-five minutes long. Attend the other 180 classes and meet the best of the best. You have until this Friday, June 27, to get your presentation in for consideration.

You have to dare to be great and listen to your inner strengths. You have studied and practiced your craft--now it is your responsibility to share your talents and passions with your brother and sister firefighters. I know from visiting all over this wonderful country that the future leaders are the instructors. It is your responsibility to repay the greats who taught you and pay it forward by contributing to the solutions. This is where the whining and complaining stops and real change is created.

We are looking for proposals for classrooms, workshops, and HOT evolutions for FDIC 2009. Download the Word document below and e-mail or mail it to us by June 27, 2008.
CLICK HERE to download the 2009 Call for Presentations.

Please e-mail the form to [email protected] or mail to: FDIC 2009 Call for Presentations, Attention: Diane Feldman, PennWell Publishing, 21-00 Route 208 South, Fair Lawn, NJ 07410.

It is fitting to reflect that 36 years ago the City Boston lost nine men in the line of duty on Commonwealth Ave and Dartmouth Street after a three hour firefight when without warning a sudden collapse took the lives of nine of Bostons bravest. The Vendome Hotel Fire memorial is dedicated to the memories and legacy of those nine Boston members firefighters killed that afternoon Lieutenant Thomas J. Carroll Lieutenant John E. Hanbury Jr. Firefighter Thomas W. Beckwith Firefighter Joseph E. Boucher Jr. Firefighter Charles E. Dolan Firefighter John E. Jameson Firefighter Richard B. Magee Firefighter Paul J. Murphy Firefighter Joseph P. Saniuk .
The City of Boston held a memorial today. Our good friend and legendary photographer Bill Noonan sent me a few photos. I hope he does not mind if I share some of his art with you. I think it is important to note that Boston never forgot and never will forget its heroes from that day. The constant respect and deep heritage of honor and duty that is a hallmark of the Boston Fire Department and in a greater sense common values for all of the fire service must be embraced as this week, we remember the Fathers Day fire, The Vendome Hotel Fire and tomorrow the Charleston Super Sofa Store fire. May God bless and protect us all and remember be careful out there. Bobby

From the New Haven Register:

In what observers describe as a highly unusual development, six judges from a polarized 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals have urged the U.S. Supreme Court to hear a reverse discrimination lawsuit filed by 20 city firefighters, calling the unchartered legal questions it raises of potential national significance.

Update: More on the case from The National Review Online.

Father's Day 2001
Queens, New York

I could not let such an important day pass with mentioning two things: first. the many fathers who selflessly made the ultimate sacrifice in the finest traditions of our service, whose memories we celebrate as we celebrate all fathers today. And second, the lessons all of us have benefited from having such incredible men in our lives. I thought a great way to share with you today would be to reread the words of the late Andy Fredericks (KIA 9/11/2001), himself a world-class father, who whenever you would call--if he wasn't writing a new Fire Engineering article--would be working on his house for his true love, his wife and his daughters. I hope you enjoy his perspective on a the Father's Day Fire, a fire which reminds us all that life is precious and that our jobs are now and forever extremely dangerous.

This was the last known published piece by our friend Andy and he wrote it for our freinds Paul and Ted who run FireNuggets.com follow this link to read this inspiring piece on the Fathers Day Fire on Nuggets and access using their FREE log on info OR register as a new User which is all FREE.click here

May God Bless you all keep you safe. Happy Father's Day and be careful out there.

Bobby
