I met Dan about 10 years ago at a burn boss class. And we were assigned to many of the same wildfires over the years. These are my memories of Dan that I will always remember.
First and foremost Dan was a Firefighter's Chief. Firefighters would do anything for him because of the way he helped and mentored those he supervised.
As you can tell from the photo Dan was one of those rare people that just made you feel good to be around. Dan was the first to crack a joke at his own expense and you always tell there was another joke just around his smile.
I will miss you Dan, the fire service has lost one of its best, no matter if you wear blue, green or yellow.

As a long-time member of WABO, the ICC, ICBO, IFCI and the current Chair of the WA State Building Code Council, I want to express my extreme grief at the loss of Chief Dan Packer. He was always a voice of reason in all of the Legislative and SBCC debates he was a part of, and was a great influence on all of us. He was a great leader to his department, to the WSAFC, and WSAFM. Thanks, Dan for all you did. And, to all who will miss him, as a leader, loved one, and friend, I am so very sorry. You will be missed, Dan! jpn

I met Dan when I was asked to be on a Citizen's Advisory Board for East Pierce Fire. I immediately realized that this was a man that could make a group of people feel part of the team from the moment he began to speak. I wanted to express my condolences to his immediate family and to his firefighting family. I recently talked with Dan and one of his grand daughters in front of their home as they were getting ready for church and as I drove away - I realized what a wonderful family member he was. There is a Hockey team in heaven Dan - you will be the leader.

What a shock! A group of us from the Idaho Fire Chiefs Assn. had attended the Washington Fire Chiefs Conference in Wenatchee just a couple weeks ago. Dan, as the outgoing WFC President, was warm and gracious to all of us. The respect and admiration the WFC Board and WFC members has for this incredible guy was impressive. The IFCA shares in the loss of Chief Packer and extends its condolences to Dan's family, his department, his communities and the Washington fire service. We have lost a really good person but what an honor to have known him.
