Fireman and paramedic Ryan Hummert was on the job in Maplewood for just shy of one year, he was by all accounts a great fireman and a wonderful person. He was murdered by a mental ill man with a high powered rifle while responding to a car fire set to ambush responders. Also shot was a 28 year old police officer who thankfully will survive. Any meaningful or comforting words escape me as to how very sad and tragic this senseless crime is.

We all accept the risks and dangers associated with completing our mission to save and protect others however none of us ever think we could be someones target. I am sure Ryan was thinking he was going to knock down the fire and help someone deal with the aggravation of loosing a car. I doubt for a minute he thought someone would be waiting to kill him and anyone like him who came to help.

Ryan will be laid to rest Friday morning, I hope if you can be in St. Louis Friday that you will be there, I sadly can not. I will stop by St. Henry's tomorrow to say a prayer for Ryan, his family and the wounded officer. If you can't be in St. Louis please remember to say a prayer. I know God's plan is sometimes too hard to understand, this type of crime proves it. God Bless you Ryan and keep all you loved safe. Below are the details for Ryan's arraignments:

Parking for persons NOT going to the cemetery should be at Deer Creek Shopping Plaza, 3200 Laclede Station Road, Maplewood. Shuttle service will be available. This will also be overflow parking from the church.
